Books we Love - July

I guess that doing a monthly post for the books that we have read is too tiring. Thus I think it would be good if I just do a post only on the books we enjoy reading togather every month.

A fish out of Water by Helen Palmer

We did a lapbook on this story which I haven’t got time to sort through all the stuffs yet. Thus I will do a post on this lapbook after I have sorted it all out.

This is a very fun book about a little boy who gets a fish and doesn't listen to Mr. Carp ( the pet shop owner) who tells him how to feed the fish. Of course the little boy doesn't follow directions and finds out that bad things can happen when you don't follow to directions.

In the end, the pet store owner comes to the rescue after the police and firemen have done their part to try to help get the fish into the water. A good lesson about listening to, and following instructions, and asking for help when you need it.

Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae

Another one of my boys favourite book, especially Jayden.

Its about a story of a giraffe name Gerald who simply wants to fit in with the other animals, but he feels as if he is inadequate because he can't dance like his friends.

At the yearly Jungle Dance, he attempts to dance but shies away from the stage when other animals laugh at him. Thus Gerald goes away humiliated, but he meets a cricket who teaches him to listen for his own special music, and that is the music he should dance to. Gerald listens and hears it, and then he starts to dance himself and it is really wonderful and all the other animals come to watch and applaud.

Where’s My Mom? by Julia Donaldson

This book has been a ‘like’ among my boys for a long time.  I shan’t elaborate more on this book here. For review about this book, you can refer here.

Starting about 2 months back, Javier started to have a very strong interest in transportation books/stories. Instead of Animal Related books which he used to bring for me to read to him, now the books he chose would be on transportation.

And these are the 3 books that we read over and over and over again for these past 1 month.

Railroad Toad by Susan Schade

I did not think that this book was so nice as to capture my attention, but it is a very easy book to read for beginning reader.  A nice rhyming story that is fun to read and a nice little look at the train ride adventures.

Digger Man by Andrea Zimmerman

A story about a little boy’s fantasy to be a digger man as he excavates the sand with his toy digger, he pictures himself driving a huge digger while his little brother sleeps. He does good work. He moves metal, scoops rocks, and splashes mud; he also thinks about digging a pond, fashioning a hill, and creating a park where he and his brother can play.

The story as well as the pictures are just great. I tried to find books on transportation by this author, but none of it managed to grab the attention of Javier as well as this book.

Lastly, this book was bought a very long time ago, but it is only recently that he started to enjoy this book.

Super Concrete Mixer by
Lori Froeb

The concrete mixer is on the move….  take a ride and see all the places concrete is used. Check out the plant where the mixer picks up its load of dry concrete mix, see how an in-ground pool is poured, and discover other ways that concrete is used.
