Chinese Home Learning

When it comes to Chinese Home Learning, I did not specifically want little boy to memorise how to write the stroke of the Chinese characters. But I did bought some book for him to practice writing though. I think his Kindy teacher did a pretty good job in this area, whenever I told him to do his writing practices, he would told me he knows how to write and added that his teacher had taught him.

Chinese Reader - 来 来 来!

A simple book with many of Javier’s favorite animals. He love reading this book!  Hear him said, “小象加油!”, he is so comical and cute. Open-mouthed smile

Doing Work

Whenever I said, “Let’s do work!”.. These are the books that he will rush into the room and bring to me. Not sure why, but he love doing it. Today, being in a good mood, he took these books to me and said he wants to do it.

提高专注力

For our 四五快读 reading, we have started this reading exercise to improve Javier’s reading concentration span.  A series of words are repeated throughout the 8 rows for the kid to read. Normally I would spilt it into 2 or 3 sessions. In order to read through these words, the kid got to really concentrate. As the words are repeated so frequently, sometimes Javier would need to pause at certain words to think before he can read it.  Especially when it comes to 米 and 来, sometimes he got abit mixed up as these 2 words look quite similar.

Learning Chinese

Recently, I am quite slack with our home learning and focusing mainly on reading. But I am glad that at least he can recognize quite a fair bit of Chinese and English words now.

So today I decided to start my engine again…. we did some learning on Chinese stroke and also work on some assessment books which Javier requested to do.

We went fishing!!!

This activity is mainly for the revision of the words or numbers that Javier had learnt recently.I printed many fishes from various colour paper and spent some time cutting all of it. :P and Jayden was very helpful to insert the paper clips to all the fishes for me this afternoon. :D

Javier was so excited when he saw the fishing rod with all the fishes and couldn’t wait to start fishing.

Books for our home learning

I have been looking for books suitable for Javier for our home learning. I find that these books are just suitable for him. I have started the red train readers for Javier’s Chinese home learning beside the 四五快读。

Whereas for English reading, I have stop the Peter and Jane series with him, as he feel so stress whenever he sees me take the book out for our alternate day learning. (I don’t want to force him to read, but would like our daily reading to be enjoyable instead) So we have started our new English learning with the red train readers (for sight words) and Progressive Phonics (for phonetic words). And I am glad to say that this works well for the both of us.

This is the Red Train Readers.

Since he can recognise some words now, reading prove to be more exciting for him now. As I read books to him, whenever he sees words which he knew, he would point it out and read it out to me. :D

From small to big ….

We did some activity on size sorting and at the same time introducing four Chinese words to Javier. 小,中,大, 特大. I find that it is much more difficult for Javier to learnt Chinese words as compared to English. He would use his bat to point to the “star” when I ask him which is the smallest, biggest, etc…..

Learning colour in mandarin

Since we are on the theme of Rainbow for these 2 weeks. I introduced some Chinese word for colour to Javier. Beside that, we also did some hand stamping on the different colour sheet. After stamping a few colours, he refused to lend me his hand anymore. :P So I just painted the colour on the colour sheet while he looked on.P1050287 After showing him the word cards for a few times, he was able to pick out the right card (most of the time) for the individual colour sheet when I presented him with 2 word cards to choose.

Update on Jayden Learning Journey

Beside his homework, normally I would spend sometime doing some assessment book with him. I find that this book who focus on the high frequency words is quite good, in terms of teaching the child to learn Chinese. Through this, Jayden learnt many new characters.

Every chapter, there would be a few sections. The first part would be introducing 4 new words, follow by sentence reading.

Our Homeschool activity 25.03.10

Recently, I have been very slow in updating my post. I just find that time is really not enough...... At night, after my kids sleep I would prepare the materials for the next day. After that, I would update my blog, but recently really feeling very lazy and tired, so my post is abit back dated.....

Today we continue with our letter D lesson. We would be doing a theme on Doctor.

Alphabet related activities

Javier pasting the stickers for the Letter D and Doctor. I realise that he like pasting stickers, thus I would try to include this activity in the weekly alphabet activity.
He looked so serious when doing his craft
Next, we did a simple doctor kit where we paste cotton bud sticks, cotton wools and plasters inside the kids. Javier really enjoy this activity alot, cos he like playing with cotton wools and he keep pasting the bud sticks until the the kit is full of it. :(
Our doctor kit

Pretend Play
Since we are on doctor theme today, we have a pretend play of a being a doctor and a nurse. Javier was having a fun time of pretending to be a doctor. He took out all the soft toys and told me all the toys are sick and need to see doctor. :) So he would patiently checked all the toys and give them medicine and injection.
The first patient is gor gor "Tigger"
My little boy looked so professional!!!!!
Enjoying himself tremendously!

Learning Chinese
After reading sunflower blog, I have a better idea how to start my boy in chinese. So today I read this book to Javier. Javier like this story alot, he keep asking me to read it again and again.

He enjoyed the story so much that he would flipped through the book himself. He would point to the different animals and told me what is it.
I ask Javier whether he got "牙刷"? He immediately went to the toilet and took out his toothbrush and show me. He even demostrated how to brush his teeths.
Cheeky boy up to mischief again!!!!!
儿歌
我们读了一首儿歌" 小花狗". 轩毅非常喜欢这首儿歌. 我一边读,一边演小花狗!轩毅看我演,他也跟着我一起演.
I hope that through this fun teaching method, Javier would grow to love chinese just like me.
Storytime
I was intending to get a book related to doctor, but couldn't find one which is suitable for Javier. So instead I got this book about a puppy for Javier. But my little boy is not interested in this story at all. He would looked here and there or even wandered off when I try to read the story to him. :(

Maths

I decided to introduced Number 1 to Javier starting from today. Cos from my previous teaching him of numbers, I find that he could not remember very well. I was thinking of focusing on one number a week to teach him numbers recognition.
We read a book on Counting
I showed Javier the number "1" and show him example of 1 apple, 1 watch.....
I put a ball inside a container and show it to him and told him there is 1 ball inside the container. But he is not interested in the theory of '1' at all, he is more interested in opening the container and taking out the ball and putting back the ball and closing the container. But at least he learnt something from this activity, practical skill of opening and closing of lid.
Free play
I let Javier play this number matching game, he is able to put most all the numbers back himself. But he doesn't really like this game, cos after playing once, he told me he don't want to play anymore and ask me to keep it.

Practical Skills
This is the first time I let Javier handle a tong. I told him to use the tongs to pick up the macroroni and put in inside the small bowl. After a few try, he can do it very well. He enjoyed playing this activity and can sit and do it for about 10mins.

Learning Chinese

Recently, I have been contemplating whether to teach Jayden chinese at home. I have been trying to find some good resources at the popular bookstore for my teaching. It was until recently that I came across this book '最常用的华文字' . Actually this book is the same as what I have bought for Jayden for the english revision book " High Frequency words".

I have just started my chinese lesson with Jayden last wednesday. I would say in the beginning of the chinese teaching would always be the most difficult. I hope that as the lessons goes on, Jayden would feel more comfortable with it. I find that teaching chinese is much more tedious than teaching him english. Sometime no matter how I teach him the word, he just could not remember, but I just got to preserved and forced myself to go on. At least, he can recognise quite a number of commonly used chinese words now.

Beside teaching him, I also like to play chinese words game with him. Whenever I see any chinese words( which I have already taught him) on the signboard, I would ask him to read it out. I also like to input the chinese words in my handphone using message mode and get him to read it to me. He really like it alot. I hope that throught doing these, he would have a great interest to learn chinese.

This is the chinese revision which I am using to teach him chinese now. I find that it is quite good.

Each lesson, there is 4 new words. After learning the new words, there is some sentences containing the new words for the child to read.
Next, the child would do some worksheet

The part is whereby the child read the sentence and choose the one that describe the picture on the left.
