Our Homeschool Activity 31.03.10

We have a short lesson today comprising of maths, practical skills and 'D' craft.

Learning Maths
Today I am still doing 1 with Javier. So I read the book "Davy the Dinosaur counting book to him". I also let him paste one piece of sticker on the number 1 card. I gave Javier a big piece of stickers. And he chose the biggest piece to stick on the hnumber card. :)
Learning Sizes
I borrowed this flaptastic size book from the library to show it to Javier
The book have great example to show the difference between the sizes.
The child can open the flap to find the very tall plant
Alphabet related Craft
For this craft, first I used a stick glue to write a letter D on the paper. Then I let Javier paint on that paper. Once he paint over the letter D which I have drawn. The letter will shown up clearly on the paper.
Javier doing his painting. Now my boy like to choose his own colour while doing painting.
He wanted to add some big red dots on the painting.
Our completed craft
Practical Skill
I let Javier practice on using sicissor today. He is improving on this but still needs alot of practice to improve his gripping skills on the sicissor.
Next, my little helper help me to spray water on the glass door while I clean it. Even though this is the first time he uses the spray, but he did a very good job. :)
He spray the water non-stop, resulting the water dripping all over the floor. :) After spraying the water for sometime, he even volunteer to help me clean the glass panel.
Storytime
We read a story " A colour of his own". Actually I have borrowed this book before. But Javier really like this story alot. When I bring him to the library a few days ago, he saw this book and gave it to me and says "I want this book"
Snack Time
We have a D snack today... namely the "Dominoes bread snack". My little boy enjoyed the m&m chocolate which I put on top of the bread. For the bread, he only eat half slice and throw away the other half. :(

Our Homeschool Activity 30.03.10

Today lesson is a revision on what we have learnt for the past few days. I show Javier the craft which we have made and the word cards.
I have make the name card. I intend to show him daily to let him recognise his own name.
Storytime
Javier like me to read him this dinosaur book.
We also read this book "Davy Dinosaur Counting" book. When I read this book to Javier, he will keep looking at the fruits and told me he want to eat. He even demostrated by putting the page to his mouth to bite it. :)

Cheeky Javier playing with the book
Free play with toys
Normally after the dinner and shower, I would like the kids play with some toys themselves. So that I can take a short rest. But I still have to sit with them, in case they fight over the toys.

Jayden playing with his lego
Next I join a track for Javier to move his train about.
After the playing, I would get the boys to keep their own toys. I hope to help them cultivate the habits of doing things themselves.

Our homeschool activity 29.03.10

Our theme for lesson 6, Letter D is "Daddy".

Daddy Craft
We started with doing a card for daddy. I punched out some heart shape for Javier to paste on the card. But instead of pasting the hearts on the paper, he is more interested in using the puncher to punch out a lot of heart shapes.

Our handmade card for Daddy

Next, I let Javier colour the letter D which I have drawn. But once again, Javier was not interested in the activity which I have planned for him. He prefer to draw the outline of his own hand. :(

Javier tracing the outline of his hand

Learning Shapes

Today we still focus on learning circle, beside showing the things that are circle, I also get him to trace the object that are circle.
Javier enjoyed tracing the outline of the objects.

I used this barney tody to teach Javier circle, once I pop the circle into the hole, barney would say"this is a circle" which I find is very good. So whenever the child pop in the shape, barney would say the name of the shape.
Storytime

We read 2 books related to daddy. The first book "Just like daddy" is introducing animals and their baby. The pictures are cute and you can feel the texture of the animals. The story is very simple and repetitive. But little Javier was not very interested in this book. The 2nd book "Daddy hugs 123" is a book which teaches the child numbers and counting. The story greatly displayed the daddy love for the baby. Mayb it would be much better if daddy read this book to Javier instead of me (can be a great bonding time for daddy and Javier). Although I find the story cute and ..... But but but... my little Javier was not the least interested in this book again!!!!!

Practical Skill
We did some pouring beans through the funnel. Javier like playing this activity.
I think this activity keep him occupied for about 15mins.Next, I also let Javier pour water from 1 bottle to the other bottle using the funnel. Javier was still not able to control the pouring of water very well. He pour too fast, resulting in the water spilling all over the floor. But since the floor is already flooded with a big puddle of water, I just let him continue with the activity. And poor mummy have to clear up the mess.

The big pudlle of water, even javier clothes is all wet. But at least Javier enjoyed this activity alot, so this little mess is still worth it. :)

Free play of toys
After their dinner and shower, Jayden told me he wants to play puzzle. Whatever Javier sees his gorgor do, he will also wants to join in. So I accompany Javier to do some puzzles.
Jayden is getting better in his puzzle skill. I think it is time to get 'more challenging' puzzle for him to do.
Javier concentration span is much better as compared to last time, he can do many puzzles now. In the past, he can't even sit down to do 1 puzzle.

Jayden K1 Spelling

Starting from term 2, Jayden would have his weekly spelling and 听写. It seems that his school is quite fast to start the kids on this. Normally what I heard from other mummy is that for the K1, the kids start their spelling during term 3 or term 4. This "spelling" thingy in turn would be a pressure on the parents, as we got to coach the child on the spelling.

Jayden first "听写". He was quite confident of this 2 words. When he came home today, I asked him how is the spelling today? He says "No problem lah, I got it all correct!" :)

Our homeschool activity 26.03.10

Our D theme for today is "DUCK".

Alphabet related Activities
We are going to do some duck craft today. First I traced Javier hand to make the feather of the duck. Javier like me to trace his hands on the paper, he keep asking me to draw until the whole paper is full of his hands!!!! :)

I cut out the shapes and Javier would paste it. I got to guide him on where to paste, if not the eyes would be paste all over the place, and the mouth would end up in the bottom.
For this activity, instead of letting Javier paste stickers on activity sheets, I used the round magnet for him to sticks on the circle. He is rather curious about magnet, he keep playing with it, moving around the board like a train.
Javier sticking the magnet on the ducks and letter "D"
2nd duck craft
Our 2nd duck craft, Javier enjoyed this craft much more than the previous craft that we did, as he got to play with cotton wool again!!!!
Our crafting in progress
Pretend Play
We sing a rhyme of "5 little Ducks". So I act out the song while I sing to make the song more interesting. I used 2 pillows to act as a mountain, so that the duck went out to play in the mountain, 1 duck would disappear behind the pillows, I continue to do so until all duck disappear. After I finished the song, I ask Javier where is all the ducks, he went to the othe side of the pillows and took out the 5 ducks and show me.

Javier even went to take his penguin and join in the ducks.

Learning Shapes
I borrowed a book from the library title " Shapes". Javier likes this book alot, he would bring this book to me to read during our lesson.
This is a very interesting book, it states how to teach the child the shapes which I think is very good.
I show Javier the things that are circle.
Maths
Showing the difference between big and small duck
Storytime
We read the "Duckling's first Spring". When I start reading this book, Javier told me 'no no.. I don't like! Then he pass me the "Shapes" book and ask me to read it instead. Then I told him, "mummy read this duckling book first ok. Then he says "ok", but after a while he told me to keep the duck book and read the shapes book again!!!! Hiaz... I think even young kids have their own like and dislike, no way to force them.

Learning Chinese

I read the "刷牙" book to Javier again and also the "小花狗"儿歌. After reading to him for 2 days, he is very familiar with the story and the rhyme now. Whenever he sees me act out the rhyme, he would follow me now.

Our Homeschool activity 25.03.10

Recently, I have been very slow in updating my post. I just find that time is really not enough...... At night, after my kids sleep I would prepare the materials for the next day. After that, I would update my blog, but recently really feeling very lazy and tired, so my post is abit back dated.....

Today we continue with our letter D lesson. We would be doing a theme on Doctor.

Alphabet related activities

Javier pasting the stickers for the Letter D and Doctor. I realise that he like pasting stickers, thus I would try to include this activity in the weekly alphabet activity.
He looked so serious when doing his craft
Next, we did a simple doctor kit where we paste cotton bud sticks, cotton wools and plasters inside the kids. Javier really enjoy this activity alot, cos he like playing with cotton wools and he keep pasting the bud sticks until the the kit is full of it. :(
Our doctor kit

Pretend Play
Since we are on doctor theme today, we have a pretend play of a being a doctor and a nurse. Javier was having a fun time of pretending to be a doctor. He took out all the soft toys and told me all the toys are sick and need to see doctor. :) So he would patiently checked all the toys and give them medicine and injection.
The first patient is gor gor "Tigger"
My little boy looked so professional!!!!!
Enjoying himself tremendously!

Learning Chinese
After reading sunflower blog, I have a better idea how to start my boy in chinese. So today I read this book to Javier. Javier like this story alot, he keep asking me to read it again and again.

He enjoyed the story so much that he would flipped through the book himself. He would point to the different animals and told me what is it.
I ask Javier whether he got "牙刷"? He immediately went to the toilet and took out his toothbrush and show me. He even demostrated how to brush his teeths.
Cheeky boy up to mischief again!!!!!
儿歌
我们读了一首儿歌" 小花狗". 轩毅非常喜欢这首儿歌. 我一边读,一边演小花狗!轩毅看我演,他也跟着我一起演.
I hope that through this fun teaching method, Javier would grow to love chinese just like me.
Storytime
I was intending to get a book related to doctor, but couldn't find one which is suitable for Javier. So instead I got this book about a puppy for Javier. But my little boy is not interested in this story at all. He would looked here and there or even wandered off when I try to read the story to him. :(

Maths

I decided to introduced Number 1 to Javier starting from today. Cos from my previous teaching him of numbers, I find that he could not remember very well. I was thinking of focusing on one number a week to teach him numbers recognition.
We read a book on Counting
I showed Javier the number "1" and show him example of 1 apple, 1 watch.....
I put a ball inside a container and show it to him and told him there is 1 ball inside the container. But he is not interested in the theory of '1' at all, he is more interested in opening the container and taking out the ball and putting back the ball and closing the container. But at least he learnt something from this activity, practical skill of opening and closing of lid.
Free play
I let Javier play this number matching game, he is able to put most all the numbers back himself. But he doesn't really like this game, cos after playing once, he told me he don't want to play anymore and ask me to keep it.

Practical Skills
This is the first time I let Javier handle a tong. I told him to use the tongs to pick up the macroroni and put in inside the small bowl. After a few try, he can do it very well. He enjoyed playing this activity and can sit and do it for about 10mins.
